By order of the Presidium of the USSR Academy of Sciences No. 10216-587 of April 16, 1976, with the consent of the Main Marine Inspectorate of the USSR Ministry of Marine Fleet, the research vessel under construction of Murmansk Marine Biological Institute of Kola Branch of the USSR Academy of Sciences was given the name “Dalnie Zelentsy” in honor of the scientific settlement located on the coast of the Barents Sea in 200 km from Murmansk, where MMBI an academic institution has been located since 1935. The document was signed by the Vice-President of the USSR Academy of Sciences, Academician A.V. Sidorenko. The ship was designed (project 1614) from 1975 to 1977 in the Central Design Bureau "Leninskaya Kuznica" (Kiev). The research vessel "Dalnie Zelentsy" was laid down on July 13, 1977, launched on April 22, 1978. Sea trials were conducted from July 4–27, 1978. The acceptance certificate was signed on August 23, 1978. This date is considered the birthday of the vessel. The fleet of MMBI RV "Dalnie Zelentsy" was incorporated in 1979.
Currently, the RV " Dalnie Zelentsy" is on an expedition in the Kara Sea.
