MARINE TERRITORIES IN THE ARCTIC ARE SUBJECT TO SPATIAL PLANNING AND PROTECTION

The delegation of MMBI took part in the activities of the Arctic Council for the Protection of the Arctic Marine Environment of (PAME), which took place from 20 to 22 September in Helsinki. As an expert of PAME, the Director of MMBI G.G. Matishov participated in the discussion and final decisions at the 2nd meeting of the PAME Working Group of 2017. On 21-22 September, under auspices of the Arctic Council for the Protection of the Arctic Marine Environment, an International Expert Workshop on the Network of Marine Protected Areas in the Arctic was held. Academician G. G. Matishov and Ph.D. N.E. Kasatkina made two oral reports on various factors of impact on marine Arctic ecosystems, including the MMBI KSC RAS research of radioactive contamination in the Arctic. After the plenary part, work was carried out in groups and a workshop with representatives of the Marine Research Center of the Finnish Environment Institute on participation in the ENI SHS Program and applying for a joint project on marine spatial planning.
