PROBLEMS OF THE ARCTIC REGION WERE DISCUSSED AT PGI, MSTU, MAGU AND MMBI CONFERENCE

The XVI International Scientific Conference of Students and PhD students "Problems of the Arctic Region" was held on the basis of Polar Geophysical Institute, Murmansk Arctic State University, Murmansk State Technical University and Murmansk Marine Biological Institute of the Kola Science Center of the Russian Academy of Science, with financial support of FAO Russia, May 16, 2017, Murmansk. The main purpose of the traditional conference was to focus the attention of high school students on scientific research of natural and social processes in the Arctic region, raising the level of education and attracting talented young people to work in science, industry and higher education. 266 participants from 38 organizations from Moscow, St. Petersburg, Murmansk, Apatity, Kirovsk, Petrozavodsk, Arkhangelsk, Yakutsk, Vologda, Syktyvkar, Grodno (Belarus), Bodø, Trondheim (Norway), Lawrence, Morgantown (USA) were announced at the conference.
On the basis of MMBI KSC RAS, "Marine Biology" section was held, the program included 16 reports. Presented works were devoted to studies of biology and population ecology peculiarities of the Arctic marine ecosystems different parts. Most of reports were made by students and post-graduate students of MMBI’s basic department from Murmansk State Technical University. Winners of creative competition for the best report on the section were O.V. Chovgan (I place for the report "Interspecific relationships between algae Fucus distichus and Palmaria palmatia"), K.S. Khacheturova (II place for the report "Communities of Polychaetes of the Kandalaksha and Onega Bays of the White Sea"), O.V. Bondarev (III place for the report "Nutrition and interspecies relations of underyearling fish in the Zelenetskaya Bay").
During the final meeting and discussion of scientific forum results, it was recommended: a) to continue the regular youth international conference on the problems of the Arctic region, b) to recommend universities to send their participants to the conference on results of their university conferences; c) to direct efforts onto attracting of more foreign participants to the conference.
